Great Mother Coatlicue of the Serpent Skirt

N Kav 19 Nov 2020

This is my homage to Mexico, her gifts to the world, and her rich ancient culture, connecting to more recent vibrant women artists, especially Frida Khalo, Ramedios Varo, and Leonora Carrington (although she was born in U.K.)
All the plants are originally from Central America, we probably use them every day, and take for granted: coffee, chocolate, vanilla, maize, chillis, avocados, sunflowers, tobacco and agave (tequila).
I thought you might enjoy this picture, it was painting this 3 years ago that lead me begin using oil paint, I just couldn’t get the colour to be vibrant enough!

Wow! Really great painting, looks like something that you might see in a national gallery or at Sotheby's!

How long did it take you?

Coool!Love the colors!

Thank you! I’m pleased you like it. It did take a few weeks, I painted in layers after layer of acrylic. The problem I’ve found with acrylic paint is that it loses its colour and vibrancy as it dries, you also have to wait for it to dry properly or the new paint leaves thin areas in the previous layer.
Oil paint retains its vivid colour and rich gloss, the only downside is the drying time! I have three cats and they are fascinated by painting, and pictures, especially wet ones, my house is filled with wet canvases and cross cats who just want to play with or sleep on them!

NKav, this is another impressive painting! Do you have more? I am super hungry to see more!

How beautiful this and great colours. The thought behind it is tender.

I can look at this for hours and still not discovered it all!
Gem after gem Neime, you keep dazzling us!

Absolutely amazing! There is so much going on here I’m going to have to come back to it more than once to catch it all.
